Dumfries and Galloway is the South West Region of Scotland and the Stewartry Coast is one of its best-kept secrets. It doesn't feature many MacDonald outlets and there is nothing resembling Blackpool Pleasure Beach to satisfy roller coaster enthusiasts, but that doesn't mean you'll be short of things to do or places to enjoy.

In fact, there is so much to explore and discover in the area that the best way to find out is to come and look around for yourself. Meantime, we are going to find out how to add links to some of the major attractions to this website. Until we solve that little conundrum let's resort to the usual cliches and say that there really is something for everyone who enjoys the pleasure of a country holiday - whether you are looking for a family break, a natural pause, physical exertion or peaceful contemplation.

Now, here's the official line.

Designated a National Scenic Area it has coastal, forest and hillside scenery as varied, interesting and accessible as the many activities open to visitors.

In addition the local towns of Dumfries, Dalbeattie, Castle Douglas, Kirkudbright and Wigtown offer a wealth of special interest attractions. Wigtown is designated Scotland's National Book Town; Castle Douglas is subtitled Food Town; Dumfries is an essential stop for anyone interested in Robert Burns: Kirkubright has its community of artists; Dalbeattie will surprise those who know little of the wonderful world of granite.

The region is currently the most heavily forested in the country and these extensive woodlands are central to a wide variety of attractions and activities. The Red Deer Range, The Red Kite Trail and an amazing selection of ranger-led wildlife and natural history events, family days and courses are just part of what they offer all year round. Not to mention the superb forest walks and top grade mountain biking, with several of the Seven Stanes trails within striking distance.
